What say you?

I just posed the following to my Twitter followers, but I thought I’d post it here too and let people discuss, debate, and give their opinions in my comments.

If you believe that a teenage girl is not mature enough or emotionally capable of consenting to sex with a much older person, do you also believe the same of the girl in the matter of deciding whether or not to have an abortion? Why or why not? If you don’t, what is the difference for you?

It’s not that I don’t believe a teenager is capable of consenting to sex with an older adult, it’s that the adult has a lot of life experience and is typically in a position of authority over the teen. This can and often causes the teenager to feel pressured or is easier to coerce into sex than they would be with someone they felt they were on equal footing with, like someone their own age.

  2. I wrote a blog post based on this. The short version there are very different considerations, emotional maturity is needed for consent to sex, however when it comes to abortion the issue is not one of giving consent it is avoiding violation of body rights.

    Hey, Sarahbear and Namelesschaos:

Thank you both for your opinions. I’ve got some thinking to do on how I want to word a response to what you’ve both said, but bear with me as I’m slow like that. heh
